Nine Substances Added to REACH Authorization ListIn case you missed it, the European Commission of the European Union (EU) has added nine new Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) to Annex XIV of the REACH regulation. The set of substances included to Annex XIV constitutes what is known as the REACH Authorization List.

When a substance is added to the Authorization list, it means that the substance cannot be used without a specific authorization. Authorization requests for the nine newly-added chemicals must be filed by deadlines ranging from February 22, 2016 to July 22, 2017.

Here are the nine substances:

  • Strontium chromate (EC 232-142-6; CAS 7789-06-2)
  • Ethylene dichloride, also known as 1,2-dichloroethane (EC 203-458-1; CAS 107-06-2)
  • Oligomeric reaction products of formaldehyde with aniline (technical MDA) (EC 500-036-1; CAS 25214-70-4)
  • Arsenic acid (EC 231-901-9; CAS 7778-39-4)
  • Bis(2-methoxyethyl) ether (diglyme) (EC 203-924-4; CAS 111-96-6)
  • 2,2′-dichloro-4,4′-methylenedianiline (EC 202-918-9; CAS 202-14-4)
  • Dichromium tris(chromate) (EC 246-356-2; CAS 24613-89-6)
  • Potassium hydroxyoctaoxodizincatedichromate (EC 234-329-6; CAS 11103-86-9)
  • Pentazinc chromate octahydroxide (EC 256-418-0; CAS 49663-84-5)

In addition, earlier in August 2014, Austria, Denmark, Germany and Sweden proposed and nominated the following ten chemicals to be classified as SVHCs:

  • Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (EC 204-211-0; CAS 117-81-7)
  • 2-benzotriazol-2-yl-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol (UV-320) (EC 223-346-6; CAS 3846-71-7)
  • Dibutyl phthalate (EC 201-557-4; CAS 84-74-2)
  • 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-ditertpentylphenol (UV-328) (EC 247-384-8; CAS 25973-55-1)
  • Cadmium sulphate (EC 233-331-6; CAS 10124-36-4 and 31119-53-6)
  • Cadmium fluoride (EC 232-222-0; CAS 7790-79-6)
  • 2-ethylhexyl 10-ethyl-4,4-dioctyl-7-oxo-8-oxa-3,5-dithia-4-stannatetradecanoate; DOTE (EC 239-622-4; CAS 15571-58-1)
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (EC 201-553-2; CAS 84-69-5)
  • Benzyl butyl phthalate (EC 201-622-7; CAS 85-68-7)
  • A reaction chemical proposed by Austria
